Description
AECOM currently has two South African opportunities at different career stages. The Civil Engineering Internship is designed for National Diploma students who still need P1 or P2 practical training, while the Assistant Project Manager role is for candidates who already have a built-environment or project-management background and want to support multidisciplinary project delivery.
The internship is the stronger fit for students who need workplace training to complete their qualification. The project-management vacancy is not an internship and expects a more developed understanding of project coordination, financial control, bids and administrative support.
Available Positions
1. Civil Engineering Intern – Centurion
AECOM’s Civil Engineering internship gives National Diploma students supervised exposure to a live infrastructure project. Interns can work with project documentation, civil-engineering fundamentals, drafting, technical reporting, health and safety requirements and, where applicable, construction-site activities.
The placement can run for 6 or 12 months depending on what the student’s University of Technology requires. A monthly stipend is provided in line with the CIDB skills-development standard referenced in the vacancy.
2. Assistant Project Manager – Multidisciplinary, Durban
The Assistant Project Manager supports design managers and project teams with project controls, reporting, data quality, bids, client engagement and general delivery support. It suits someone who wants to build a career around coordinating technical projects rather than working in only one engineering discipline.
About AECOM
AECOM works across infrastructure, buildings, transport, water, environment and other engineering fields. Both roles offer exposure to multidisciplinary teams, but the level of responsibility differs significantly between the internship and the Assistant Project Manager vacancy.
Eligibility and Qualifications
Civil Engineering Internship: Applicants must be enrolled for a National Diploma in Civil Engineering at a recognised University of Technology and must require P1 and/or P2 practical training as part of the qualification. Good academic standing and a recent academic transcript are required.
Assistant Project Manager: The listing accepts relevant built-environment qualifications, including a National Diploma or National Higher Diploma, and also references project-management-related study such as procurement or quantity surveying.
Experience
No previous work experience is required for the Civil Engineering internship; tertiary coursework is considered enough for the placement. The Assistant Project Manager role is a professional vacancy, so applicants should read the experience section on the official listing carefully before applying.
Skills
Intern applicants should be comfortable with Microsoft Office, technical communication and basic engineering work; AutoCAD or Civil 3D exposure can help. The project-management role requires stronger coordination, reporting, stakeholder and organisational skills because it supports several parts of project delivery.
Which AECOM Opportunity Fits You?
If your university requires P1 or P2, the internship is the clear choice. If you already have a relevant built-environment qualification and are interested in project coordination, delivery systems, bids and multidisciplinary work, the Assistant Project Manager vacancy is the more suitable route.
