Description
Valterra Platinum’s Engineering Learnership Programme is aimed at unemployed applicants who want to qualify in an artisan trade and build practical experience inside a working mining environment. The programme combines formal technical learning with supervised workplace training, so learners are not only studying trade theory but also developing the practical competence required in engineering operations.
There are nine trade options in this intake. Each one has its own N2 subject requirements, which means applicants should choose the trade that matches the subjects they have already completed rather than applying based only on the number of places available.
Available Learnerships
1. Electrician Learnership – 2 Positions
The electrical stream is suited to applicants who want to work with electrical systems, equipment and industrial installations. The N2 route requires Electrical Trade Theory together with Industrial Electronics or Engineering Drawings.
2. Boilermaker Learnership – 3 Positions
This trade focuses on fabrication and structural metal work. Applicants following the N2 route need Plating or Welders Theory together with Plating Structural and Steelwork Drawings.
3. Mechanical Fitter Learnership – 4 Positions
Mechanical fitting is a practical maintenance trade involving machinery, components and mechanical systems. The stated N2 subjects include Fitting Trade Theory and Engineering Drawings.
4. Diesel Mechanic Learnership – 2 Positions
The diesel mechanic stream is relevant to applicants interested in engines and heavy mechanical equipment. The programme requires Diesel or Motor Trade Theory and Engineering Drawings for the N2 pathway.
5. Heavy Equipment Mechanic Learnership – 2 Positions
This option is geared towards the maintenance of heavy equipment used in an industrial or mining setting. Applicants need Diesel or Motor Trade Theory and Engineering Drawings when applying through the N2 route.
6. Measurement Control & Instrumentation Learnership – 1 Position
Instrumentation work centres on measurement, monitoring and control systems used in industrial operations. The required N2 subjects include Instrument Trade Theory and Industrial Electronics.
7. Auto Electrical Learnership – 1 Position
The auto electrical stream is for applicants interested in electrical systems used in vehicles and mobile equipment. The N2 requirements include Motor Electrical Trade Theory and Industrial Electronics.
8. Millwright Learnership – 2 Positions
Millwright training combines mechanical and electrical skills, making it suitable for candidates who want a broader maintenance trade. The official requirements refer to Electrical and Fitting Trade Theories together with Engineering Drawings or Industrial Electronics.
9. Rigger Learnership – 2 Positions
Rigging involves the safe movement, lifting and positioning of heavy equipment and loads. Applicants using the N2 route need Rigger Trade Theory and Engineering Theory.
About Valterra Platinum
Valterra Platinum, formerly Anglo American Platinum, produces platinum group metals and operates mining, smelting and refining assets in Southern Africa. The Amandelbult operation is in Limpopo between Northam and Thabazimbi. For a learner, that means the training takes place in an environment where engineering trades directly support mining production, equipment reliability and workplace safety.
Eligibility
- Matric with Mathematics, not Mathematical Literacy.
- Physical Science and English are also required.
- The minimum stated pass mark for Mathematics, Physical Science and English is 40%.
- Applicants using the N2 route need N2 or higher with all four subjects passed, including Mathematics and Engineering Science, plus the trade-specific subjects for the discipline selected.
- An NCV Level 4 in the appropriate trade is also accepted when all subjects have been passed with at least 40%.
- Host-community applicants must include proof of residence stamped by the relevant tribal office or municipality.
- The programme is advertised as an 18.2 unemployed learnership.
What the Training Involves
The programme includes both off-the-job training and workplace training. Learners will work towards the technical knowledge and practical competence required in their chosen trade. Successful completion leads to a nationally recognised Artisan qualification. The exact day-to-day activities will differ by trade, but all learners should expect structured assessment, practical instruction and exposure to engineering work in a mining operation.
Skills That Matter
Technical subjects are the first screening point, but they are not the only thing that matters. Engineering learnerships also require people who can follow instructions carefully, work safely, solve practical problems and stay consistent through both classroom and workplace training. Applicants should be comfortable learning from experienced artisans and working in an environment where accuracy and safety procedures are important.
What to Check Before You Apply
- Match your N2 or NCV subjects to the exact trade you want to apply for.
- Do not use Mathematical Literacy where the advert specifically requires Mathematics.
- Make sure every qualification you claim is supported by a readable certified copy.
- Prepare a clear copy of your South African ID.
- If you are applying from a host community, check that your proof of residence carries the required official stamp.
- Review every uploaded document before submitting because the employer states that incomplete applications will be declined.
How to Apply
Applications are submitted through Valterra Platinum’s official SmartRecruiters vacancy page. Upload your CV, certified copies of relevant qualifications, your South African ID and any required proof of residence. The company says applications are reviewed as they arrive, so there is no benefit in waiting until the final day.
