The Commission for Gender Equality is inviting applications for two 24-month internship programmes at its Head Office in Johannesburg. The current intake covers Policy and Research as well as Monitoring and Evaluation, giving suitably qualified graduates an opportunity to build practical experience inside a Chapter 9 institution. Both programmes are structured for candidates who meet the specified academic requirements, are South African citizens and have not previously participated in an internship programme. The roles are particularly useful for graduates interested in research, public institutions, programme monitoring, social policy, statistics and evidence-based reporting. Interns will be responsible for their own transport to the Braamfontein office and will enter into a formal internship agreement for the full programme period.

Available Internship Programmes

Policy & Research Internship

  • Duration: 24 months
  • Stipend: R8,500 per month
  • Centre: Head Office, Johannesburg
  • Qualification: Master of Arts degree in Social Sciences or another relevant Social Sciences discipline

This internship is suited to a postgraduate candidate who wants direct exposure to policy and research work connected to gender equality. A valid driver’s licence is essential, and applicants must be willing to travel extensively across South Africa for research activities. The role requires someone who can work independently while still contributing effectively within a team.

Monitoring and Evaluation Internship

  • Duration: 24 months
  • Stipend: R7,500 per month
  • Centre: Head Office, Johannesburg
  • Qualification: Bachelor’s NQF Level 7, Honours or Master’s degree in Monitoring and Evaluation, Statistics, Public Administration, Public Management, Information Management, Social Sciences or a related field

The Monitoring and Evaluation programme is aimed at graduates who can work accurately with information and reporting. Computer literacy is important, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Access, Excel, MS Project or Power BI, PowerPoint and Outlook. Strong written and verbal communication, confidentiality and attention to detail are also highlighted.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must be South African citizens and must not have previously participated in an internship programme. The academic requirement differs by stream, so candidates should apply only to the programme that matches their completed qualification. Foreign qualifications must be accompanied by the required SAQA evaluation report.

What You Will Gain

The internships provide two years of structured workplace exposure inside an independent constitutional institution. Depending on the selected programme, interns can build experience in policy research, evidence gathering, programme monitoring, reporting, data interpretation, institutional processes and professional communication. The programmes do not create an obligation for CGE to employ interns permanently after completion.

Application Process

Submit a detailed CV containing the requested personal information together with certified copies of your ID and qualifications. Applications must be emailed to recruitment@cge.org.za.

Closing Date

Applications close on 25 August 2026. Late applications will not be accepted. For programme enquiries, applicants can contact Ms Nthabiseng Masopha on 011 403 7182.
