The application deadline was 26 August 2026.
Macsteel is recruiting an Operator General I for its Tube and Pipe production operation at Macsteel City in Elandsfontein, Gauteng. The vacancy is a full-time manufacturing role for someone who can safely operate an overhead travelling crane and support the movement of pipe and tube bundles through the production area. The successful candidate will be directly involved in keeping the storage conveyor and trailer-loading process moving efficiently while protecting lifting equipment, products and people around the work area. This position requires physical fitness and practical crane-operating ability, so it is more suitable for applicants with hands-on production or material-handling experience than candidates looking for an office-based entry-level role.
Job Details
- Position: Operator General I
- Reference: MCS260819-1
- Business unit: Tube and Pipe
- Department: Production
- Location: Macsteel City – Elandsfontein, Gauteng
- Employment: Full-time
- Positions: 1

Minimum Requirements
Applicants need Grade 12 or a National Certificate and must be able to read, write and speak English. A valid Crane Licence is required and candidates must provide proof of certification. The role also requires proven ability to operate an overhead travelling crane, including slinging.
Strong coordination and physical dexterity are important. The successful applicant must be physically fit and able to remain on their feet for extended periods. Macsteel also expects someone who can work independently with limited supervision while still functioning well as part of the wider production team.
Main Responsibilities
The Operator checks that the overhead travelling crane and lifting equipment are in good working condition. Before moving bundles, the employee visually checks pipe and tube ends, labels and straps so that material can be moved without unnecessary damage or disruption.
Another important responsibility is keeping the storage conveyor flowing. The Operator makes sure trailers are available close to the conveyor and that bundles are offloaded on time. If the crane breaks down, the employee needs to arrange forklift support so material can continue to move and the mill is not stopped unnecessarily.
Production Support
Daily crane and lifting-equipment logbooks must be completed accurately. The employee also helps the bundling operator during changeovers and supports good housekeeping around the work area. Remote-control equipment must remain functional, and audible warnings must be used when moving loads so people in the area are aware of the crane movement.
Safety and Product Care
Safety is central to the role. Bundles must be handled carefully to avoid damage during transport, and the operator needs to plan movements before lifting or transferring material. This requires good spatial awareness, coordination and discipline in a fast-moving production setting.
How to Apply
Applications are completed through Macsteel’s official recruitment portal. Upload a CV that clearly shows Grade 12, the valid Crane Licence and direct experience operating an overhead travelling crane.
