The application deadline was 25 August 2026.
The National Metrology Institute of South Africa is recruiting a graduate for a 24-month Temperature Metrology internship in Pretoria. This programme is designed for a technically strong science graduate who wants practical laboratory exposure rather than a general office-based internship. The successful intern will work around national temperature measurement standards and the systems used to transfer reliable measurement traceability to industry. That makes the opportunity particularly relevant to graduates interested in physics, calibration, measurement science, scientific data analysis and laboratory automation. The work combines hands-on technical tasks with documentation, quality requirements and analytical problem solving, so applicants should be comfortable working carefully with data and following controlled laboratory procedures. No prior relevant work experience is required, and the advert specifically states that applicants with relevant work experience will not be considered. The programme therefore fits a recent graduate looking for a structured first step into a specialist scientific environment.
Programme Details
- Programme: Internship: Temperature
- Duration: 24 months
- Location: Pretoria, South Africa
- Stipend: R6,758 to R8,878 per month, depending on qualification level
- Closing date: 25 August 2026
Education and Technical Requirements
Applicants need a BSc Honours degree in Physics or a related technical field. The role also requires knowledge of programming and laboratory automation, scientific data analysis and simulations, as well as a strong understanding of uncertainty analysis and physics-based corrections. Computer literacy in Microsoft Office is expected.
Knowledge of temperature measurement systems, ISO/IEC 17025, the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement and scientific publication or international collaboration experience can strengthen an application. These additional areas are useful because the internship works in a technical environment where measurement quality, traceability and defensible results are central to the work.
What the Intern Will Do
The intern will assist with calibrating temperature sensors and help prepare calibration certificates and uncertainty budgets. Accurate record keeping is also part of the role, including maintaining job records and technical documentation. The programme includes exposure to the institute’s Total Quality Management System and ISO/IEC 17025 compliance requirements. The intern will also support laboratory planning activities such as budgeting and resource inputs.
This means the position is not limited to observing laboratory work. It gives the successful graduate practical involvement in the technical and quality processes that support measurement services. Attention to detail is important because calibration records, uncertainty calculations and laboratory documentation must be handled accurately.
Skills That Suit This Internship
NMISA is looking for someone with analytical thinking, strong attention to detail and a willingness to learn. Reliability, integrity, accountability and the ability to work independently as well as within a team are important. Creativity and innovative thinking are also valuable because technical laboratory work can involve troubleshooting, interpreting results and improving how tasks are completed.
Documents Required
The application must include four separate PDF documents: a CV, a certified copy of the applicant’s ID, qualification certificates and a clean PDF copy of the full academic transcript. The documents must be named according to the format stated in the vacancy notice. Applicants should follow the file-format instructions carefully because incomplete or incorrectly formatted applications are not considered.
How to Apply
Email the application to careers3@nmisa.org and use the exact subject line Internship_Temperature. Submit only one application and attach the four required PDF files separately.
