The Mpumalanga Department of Economic Development and Tourism has opened a broad Graduate Internship Programme across economic development, tourism, law, information technology, auditing and business support. Current placements are available in Mbombela, KwaMhlanga, Witbank and Bushbuckridge, with a monthly package of R8,174.75. The programme gives graduates a route into provincial government work that is directly connected to their field of study, rather than placing every intern into the same general administrative function.

Tourism and Economic Development Placements
Several of the current internships sit directly inside the department’s economic development mandate. Tourism graduates can enter the Tourism stream, while Economics and Business Management graduates have options in Economic Planning, Trade and Investment Promotion, Regional Local Economic Development and Enterprise Development. These functions are connected with how a provincial department plans growth, supports enterprises, promotes investment and works with regional economic priorities.
The separate Trade and Investment Promotion placements in KwaMhlanga and Mbombela give applicants a choice of location while using the same Business Management or Economics qualification profile. Economic Planning and Regional Local Economic Development are more directly aligned with Economics graduates, while Enterprise Development accepts Business Management or Economics.
Legal Internship Routes
The Consumer Protection and Business Regulations placements both require an LLB. The two streams sit in different parts of the department’s regulatory work. Consumer Protection relates to the protection of consumers within the provincial economic environment, while Business Regulations connects more broadly with the legal and regulatory framework affecting business activity. An LLB graduate should apply to the stream that best matches the work area and location shown on the provincial recruitment portal.
ICT and Internal Audit Opportunities
The Information and Communication internship in Mbombela is for graduates with a three-year National Diploma or Degree in Information and Communication Technology. The Internal Audit stream is also based in Mbombela and accepts qualifications in Internal Audit, Auditing, BCom Auditing or a Bachelor of Accounting Sciences specialising in Internal Auditing.
These two placements serve internal professional functions that support the department’s operations. ICT work helps government systems and information services function effectively, while internal audit contributes to governance, controls, assurance and accountability.
Qualification Standard
The provincial eRecruitment portal specifies an appropriate SAQA-recognised three-year National Diploma or Degree for the listed streams, with the exact field depending on the internship. Applicants should use the qualification wording attached to the position they choose because a qualification that matches one DEDT stream may not satisfy another.
