Managed People Solutions is recruiting Junior Merchandiser Interns for wine and spirits clients in Vredenburg and Graaff-Reinet. What a Junior Merchandiser Does
Merchandising work takes place inside retail stores and focuses on making sure products are available, correctly presented and easy for customers to find. Interns work with stock, displays and promotional activity while learning how suppliers and retailers manage product visibility. In the wine and spirits sector, accurate stock rotation and pricing are also important because product condition, shelf position and promotional compliance can affect sales performance.
- Check stock availability and identify out-of-stock items.
- Maintain merchandising and display standards in stores.
- Check product quality, rotation and pricing.
- Support promotions and promotional displays.
- Record information required from store calls.
- Assist with complaints or requests linked to product availability and merchandising.
- Work with store teams to maintain agreed shelf and display execution.
Vredenburg Requirements
The Vredenburg internship is designed for candidates with an N6 qualification in Marketing Management or Business Management who need workplace exposure. Applicants should be unemployed, under 28 years old and must not previously have completed a similar internship. The 18-month structure is aligned with the workplace-experience requirement attached to the N6 route.
Graaff-Reinet Requirements
The Graaff-Reinet opportunity allows two study routes. Candidates with an N6 TVET qualification can enter the 18-month workplace-experience programme, while applicants with an NCV Level 4 qualification can complete a 12-month internship. The listing targets young people aged 18 to 28 and does not require previous work experience.
Skills Developed in Retail Merchandising
The placement can develop practical skills that are difficult to build through classroom study alone. Interns learn how to organise a store call, inspect stock, follow product standards and record what happens at the outlet. They also gain customer-service and communication experience because merchandising often requires interaction with store employees, managers and the sales team supporting the brand.
Working to a daily store schedule also develops time management and personal accountability. A merchandiser needs to complete required calls, identify problems quickly and keep records accurate enough for the sales or supplier team to understand what is happening in each outlet.
Financial Support
Both current listings state a stipend of R3,500 per month. This is the published internship amount and should be considered together with the programme length that applies to the candidate’s qualification.
Who the Internship Suits
The programme is suitable for unemployed youth who want entry-level experience in sales, retail and merchandising and whose qualification matches one of the listed study routes. It is particularly relevant to candidates who need formal workplace experience to complement TVET studies and are comfortable spending their working day in a retail environment rather than in a desk-based office role.
Store Execution and Reporting Experience
A merchandising internship also teaches candidates how store-level information supports sales decisions. When an item is out of stock, incorrectly priced or missing from an agreed display, the merchandiser needs to record the problem accurately so that the relevant sales or supply team can respond. This makes store-call records more than an administrative task: they help the business understand whether products are available and whether promotions are being executed as planned.
The role can also develop an understanding of product rotation and quality checks. In beverage retail, older stock may need to be moved forward and displays need to remain compliant with store and brand requirements. Repeating these checks across several outlets helps an intern build consistency, observation skills and confidence communicating with retail staff.
