The National Empowerment Fund (NEF), in collaboration with the Wholesale and Retail Sector Education and Training Authority (W&RSETA), is offering unemployed South African graduates a powerful opportunity to gain real work experience in the Retail and Wholesale sector through their Graduate Placement Programme.

This is a 12-month growth journey designed to help qualified graduates sharpen their critical skills, learn from industry experts, and build the confidence and experience needed to launch a successful career in one of South Africa’s most active and fast-paced industries. The retail and wholesale sector employs millions of South Africans and this programme gives you the inside track.

Successful graduates will be placed across six provinces KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Free State, Gauteng, Limpopo, and the Western Cape meaning this opportunity is accessible to young graduates in many parts of the country.

If you have completed a diploma or degree in a business-related field and you are currently unemployed, this programme was built for you.


Key Responsibilities

As a graduate on this programme, you will gain hands-on exposure and experience in the following areas depending on your field of study and placement:

  • Supporting day-to-day business operations within your host organisation in the retail or wholesale sector.
  • Applying your academic knowledge to real workplace challenges and projects.
  • Assisting with administrative, financial, marketing, HR, or supply chain tasks as relevant to your qualification.
  • Learning from experienced industry professionals and sector experts.
  • Participating in team meetings, projects, and operational activities.
  • Developing and refining your professional communication and workplace skills.
  • Completing any reports, assessments, or documentation required by the programme.
  • Representing the NEF and W&RSETA with professionalism and integrity throughout your placement.

🌍 Placement Provinces

Successful graduates will be placed in host organisations located in the following provinces:

Province Areas
KwaZulu-Natal Various locations
Mpumalanga Various locations
Free State QwaQwa and Bloemfontein
Gauteng Various locations
Limpopo Various locations
Western Cape Various locations

Qualifications & Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for this programme, you must meet all of the following requirements:

Qualification:
You must have completed a Diploma or Degree in one of the following fields:

  • Business Management
  • Marketing Management
  • Financial Management
  • Human Resource Management
  • Supply Chain Management / Logistics
  • Retail Business Management
  • Wholesale and Retail Operations
  • Public Management / Public Administration
  • Office Administration
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Any other relevant qualification

Additional Requirements:

  • ✅ Must be currently unemployed.
  • ✅ Must not be registered in any other learnership or graduate programme.
  • ✅ No prior work experience is required.
  • ✅ Must be a South African citizen.
  • ✅ Must be computer literate comfortable using basic computer programmes and office tools.

Education & Experience

  • Education: A completed National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in a business-related field is required. You must have already completed your qualification this programme is not open to students who are still studying. Graduates from universities, universities of technology, and TVET colleges with the relevant qualifications are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience: No prior work experience is required. This programme is specifically designed for graduates who are entering the working world for the first time.
  • Your 12-month placement will serve as your first official work experience in the retail and wholesale industry.
