Valterra Platinum, formerly known as Anglo American Platinum and one of the world’s leading platinum mining companies, is offering Engineering Learnerships for 2026 across six skilled trade disciplines. This is a rare and highly valuable opportunity for young South Africans who want to build a career in engineering and the mining sector.
These learnerships are structured programmes that combine formal classroom training with hands-on practical experience at real mining and processing sites. You will not just be studying you will be working, learning, and developing into a skilled professional at the same time.
Upon successful completion of all levels of the programme and passing your final Trade Test, you will qualify as a Red Seal Artisan one of the most respected and widely recognised trade qualifications in South Africa, valid across all industries and provinces.

Available Trade Streams
Applications are open for the following six engineering disciplines:
- Fitter
- Boilermaker Plater
- Electrician
- Measure Control & Instrumentation Mechanic (Instrumentation)
- Millwright
- Welder

Key Responsibilities & Programme Details
As a learner on this programme, you will be expected to:
- Follow a Structured Learning Path: complete formal classroom instruction covering the theory behind your specific trade
- Hands-On Practical Training: perform real maintenance tasks and technical work at Valterra Platinum’s mining or processing sites
- Safety First Zero Harm Policy: strictly adhere to Valterra Platinum’s Zero Harm safety standards at all times, including participating in safety audits, risk assessments, and workplace housekeeping
- Progress Through All Levels: complete each level of the learnership programme as required before moving to the next
- Final Trade Test: sit and pass the official Trade Test at the end of the programme to earn your Red Seal Artisan qualification
- Professionalism: conduct yourself professionally on site, follow instructions from supervisors, and represent yourself and your community with pride
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for any of the six trade streams, you must meet one of the following three educational options:
Option 1 — Matric (Grade 12)
- Mathematics (Mathematical Literacy is NOT accepted Pure Maths only)
- Physical Science
- English
- All three subjects must have a minimum pass of 40%
Option 2 — N2 or Higher (TVET College)
- Must have passed all subjects required for your specific trade
- Examples:
- Electricians → Electrical Trade Theory
- Boilermaker Platers → Plating & Structural Steelwork
- Fitters → Engineering Science and Fitting & Machining Theory
- Welders → Welding Theory
- Millwrights → relevant N2 subjects for millwright trade
- Instrumentation → Instrumentation-related trade subjects
Option 3 — NCV Level 4 (National Certificate Vocational)
- Must hold an NCV Level 4 in the appropriate trade field
- All subjects must have been passed with a minimum of 40%
