The National Department of Health (NDOH) the South African government department responsible for developing health policy, managing national health programmes, and ensuring access to quality healthcare for all South Africans is recruiting for four positions across three critical directorates in Pretoria.

The NDOH oversees some of the country’s most important health initiatives, including the rollout of digital health systems, HIV/AIDS prevention programmes, and national ICT infrastructure that supports healthcare delivery across all nine provinces. What this role is about:
The NDOH’s Digital Health Information Systems Chief Directorate is driving the digital transformation of South Africa’s health sector developing and implementing the technology systems that health facilities, clinics, and government offices use to manage patient information, health data, and service delivery. As a Deputy Director: Project Management, you will lead and manage key digital health projects from inception through to successful delivery.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop comprehensive project scopes, plans, and timelines for digital health information system projects.
  • Oversee the end-to-end delivery of projects, ensuring they are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standard.
  • Document detailed functional and non-functional requirements for digital health systems, working with technical teams and health sector stakeholders.
  • Perform risk management identifying, assessing, and mitigating project risks before they escalate.
  • Monitor and report on project progress to senior management and relevant stakeholders.
  • Coordinate between internal teams, external vendors, and provincial health departments to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Apply Agile methodology principles where applicable to manage iterative project delivery.

Minimum Requirements:

  • βœ… NQF Level 7 qualification in Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Economics, or ICT.

What this role is about:
As the NDOH increasingly relies on digital systems to manage health data, patient records, and programme information, cybersecurity has become a national health priority. The Deputy Director: ICT Security is responsible for protecting the NDOH’s entire digital infrastructure developing security frameworks, managing security vendors, and ensuring the department’s systems are robust, resilient, and protected from cyber threats.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and continuously monitor a comprehensive departmental IT risk management programme that protects all NDOH systems and data.
  • Manage outsourced security vendors overseeing service level agreements, performance, and quality of external cybersecurity service providers.
  • Design robust and secure IT systems and infrastructure, ensuring security is built into all new developments and upgrades from the ground up.
  • Manage and coordinate security audit responses ensuring that findings from internal and external audits are addressed promptly and effectively.
  • Develop and enforce IT security policies, procedures, and standards across the NDOH.

The Barrier Method sub-directorate plays a direct role in the fight against HIV/AIDS managing the national condom distribution programme, which is a critical HIV and STI prevention strategy. As Assistant Director, you will coordinate and support the implementation of South Africa’s male and female condom programmes across all nine provinces.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate male and female condom distribution across South Africa working with provincial health departments, warehouses, and distribution partners.
  • Provide technical support and training to provincial health teams on the implementation of barrier method prevention strategies.
  • Facilitate condom marketing strategies supporting national campaigns and communication initiatives.
  • Monitor batch testing results from the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) to ensure distributed products meet quality and safety standards.
  • Compile and analyse programme data and reports on condom distribution, uptake, and quality performance.

Minimum Requirements:

  • βœ… NQF Level 6 qualification in Biomedical Technology or Health Science.
  • βœ… Minimum of 3 years’ experience in STI and condom programme training or a closely related HIV/AIDS prevention field.
