The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) the South African government department responsible for ensuring that all South Africans have access to safe, clean water and adequate sanitation is recruiting for a General Worker position.
Water is one of South Africa’s most critical and scarce resources, and the DWS plays a vital role in managing dams, water infrastructure, flood control systems, and water utilisation across the country. General Workers are an essential part of this work supporting artisans, maintaining facilities and equipment, and keeping water infrastructure clean, functional, and safe.
This is an entry-level government position ideal for individuals who are physically fit, reliable, and willing to work in outdoor and field environments, including being away from the office for extended periods when required. π οΈ Core Duties & Responsibilities
As a General Worker at the Department of Water and Sanitation, your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
- Facility & Equipment Maintenance: Provide hands-on assistance in the maintenance of DWS facilities, vehicles, and equipment to ensure they remain in good working condition.
- Equipment Repair, Cleaning & Servicing: Repair, clean, and service tools and equipment according to established departmental standards and procedures.
- Routine Electrical & Infrastructure Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance tasks on electrical equipment and dam walls as directed by supervisors and artisans.
- Housekeeping & Cleanliness: Keep all structures, surrounding areas, grids, and work sites clean, tidy, and safe at all times.
- Technical Support: Support qualified Artisans and other technical personnel with mechanical or electrical services, providing assistance as required on the job.
- Loading & Offloading: Handle the physical loading and offloading of equipment, tools, and materials from vehicles as part of operational tasks.
- Reporting: Promptly report any unserviceable, damaged, or lost equipment to the relevant supervisor so that it can be repaired, replaced, or written off appropriately.
- Extended Fieldwork: Be available and willing to work away from the main office for extended periods when operational needs require it including at dam sites, water infrastructure facilities, and remote field locations.
β Eligibility & Requirements
To be considered for this post, you should have the following knowledge and understanding:
- β Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) understanding of workplace safety rules, personal protective equipment, and hazard awareness.
- β Basic knowledge of Public Administration general awareness of how government departments operate and the importance of following procedures and policies.
- β Basic knowledge of water utilisation and water resources strategy understanding of how South Africa manages and uses its water resources.
- β Basic knowledge of flood control awareness of flood management measures and related government infrastructure.
- β Understanding of relevant Government legislation general knowledge of the laws and regulations that govern the DWS and its operations.
- β Physical fitness and the ability to perform manual, hands-on work in outdoor and field environments.
- β Willingness to work away from the office for extended periods when required.
- β Preference will be given to candidates from the local geographical area of the posting.
Education & Experience
While no specific formal qualification is listed as a minimum requirement for this General Worker post, the following will be advantageous:
- Any training or coursework related to Occupational Health and Safety.
- Any exposure to water infrastructure, dam management, or technical maintenance work.
- A basic literacy and numeracy level sufficient to understand safety instructions and follow written procedures.
- No specific prior work experience is listed as a formal requirement, but previous experience in maintenance, construction, or infrastructure will be an advantage.
