Job Description
Dis-Chem, one of South Africa’s most trusted pharmacy and health retail chains, is offering a Dispensary Support Learnership for young South Africans who want to build a career in pharmacy. This is a specialised, entry-level programme designed to help you qualify as a Basic Pharmacist Assistant while gaining real, hands-on experience inside a working pharmacy.
Over the course of the learnership, you will complete the Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant course a nationally recognised qualification while working directly in a Dis-Chem dispensary under the supervision of qualified pharmacists. You will learn how medicines are prepared, dispensed, and managed, and you will interact daily with customers who depend on Dis-Chem for their health needs.
This is more than just a learnership. Candidates who successfully complete the programme and qualify are frequently considered for permanent employment as Basic Pharmacist Assistants within Dis-Chem. Key Responsibilities
As a Dispensary Support Learner at Dis-Chem, your duties will include:
- Dispensing Support – Assist with the preparation of non-sterile medicines and the supervised sale of Schedule 1 medicines
- Stock Management – Help unpack, merchandise, and organise medication on shelves, and check expiration dates regularly
- Customer Service – Interact professionally with patients, assist with tracking prescriptions, and provide basic health-related information
- Accurate Picking & Packing – Pick, pack, and label medication accurately and carefully as per the pharmacist’s instructions
- Compliance – Follow all pharmacy regulations, Dis-Chem policies, and standard operating procedures at all times
- Learning & Assessments – Complete all coursework, assessments, and practical requirements of the Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification
Eligibility & Requirements
To be considered for this learnership, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- Must have a Grade 12 (Matric) Certificate
- Must have passed Mathematics (Higher Grade) as a Matric subject
- Must have passed either Life Science or Physical Science as a Matric subject
- Must have a minimum average of 50% across all your Matric subjects
- Must be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID
- Must have no criminal record
- Should ideally live within a reasonable distance of the store you are applying to
Education
The minimum education requirement is a National Senior Certificate (Matric / Grade 12) with the following specific subject requirements:
- Mathematics (Higher Grade) compulsory
- Life Science OR Physical Science one of these is required
- Overall average of at least 50% across all subjects
Please note: Agricultural Science and Maths Literacy are not accepted substitutes for Pure Mathematics or Physical/Life Science for this programme.
Experience
- No prior pharmacy or work experience is required
- This is a fully entry-level learnership
- All dispensary knowledge and pharmacy skills will be taught during the programme under the supervision of registered pharmacists
