Ampath Laboratories, one of South Africa’s leading pathology and laboratory services providers, is offering an exciting opportunity for young South Africans to start a career in healthcare through their HWSETA-Funded Phlebotomy Technician Learnership Programme.
Phlebotomy is the practice of drawing blood from patients for medical testing and diagnosis it is a critical skill in every clinic, hospital, and laboratory across the country. Through this fully funded, accredited programme, you will receive 24 months of comprehensive training that combines classroom learning with real, hands-on clinical experience at Ampath Care Centres.
Upon successful completion of the programme, you will be eligible to register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a qualified Phlebotomy Technician a recognised, in-demand healthcare qualification that opens doors across both the public and private health sectors.
This programme is completely free of charge to accepted candidates, funded jointly by HWSETA and Ampath Laboratories. If you are under 35, have a strong Matric, and are passionate about healthcare this is your launchpad.
Key Responsibilities
During the 24-month learnership, you will be trained in and expected to perform the following:
- Blood Collection (Phlebotomy): Learn and practise the correct techniques for drawing blood from patients safely and efficiently
- Laboratory Procedures: Assist with specimen handling, labelling, and processing in a professional laboratory environment
- Patient Care: Interact with patients in a professional, compassionate, and reassuring manner
- Infection Control & Safety: Follow strict health, safety, and hygiene protocols at all times
- Documentation: Accurately record patient information, samples, and results
- Equipment Handling: Correctly use, clean, and maintain phlebotomy and laboratory equipment
- Clinical Exposure: Complete hands-on practical hours at Ampath Care Centres across your training site
- Online & Classroom Learning: Attend and complete all structured online classes and in-person training sessions Monday to Friday
Eligibility Requirements
Before applying, make sure you meet all of the following criteria:
- Must be under 35 years of age this is a youth empowerment initiative by HWSETA
- Must have a Matric Certificate with a minimum of 60% in each of the following subjects:
- Pure Mathematics
- Life Sciences or Biology
- English
- Must not hold any qualification above NQF Level 4 candidates with diplomas or degrees are not eligible for HWSETA funding
- Must have access to a smartphone or device with a stable internet connection for online learning
- Must be available full-time no other employment is permitted during the programme
- Must be willing to attend training at either Centurion (Gauteng) or Westridge (Durban, KZN)
Education
The minimum education requirement is a National Senior Certificate (Matric) with at least 60% in Pure Mathematics, Life Sciences/Biology, and English. This is important applicants who did not pass these subjects at 60% or above will not qualify.
Candidates must also not have any qualification above NQF Level 4 (i.e. no diploma, degree, or higher certificate) in order to be eligible for HWSETA funding.
Experience
- No prior healthcare or work experience is required
- All clinical and practical skills will be taught during the 24-month programme
- You will gain real-world experience through hands-on placement at Ampath Care Centres
